Traditional Jewish belief has the Arabs descended from both Ishmael son of Abraham and Esau, aka Edom, son of Isaac. In reality, the Arabs of Syria/Palestine/Jordan are probably descended in considerable part from the Greek Christians and the Jews who lived there in late antiquity. The bargain offered by the conquering Arabs - convert and we'll treat you well - was one that was taken up by lots of people in Anatolia and the Levant, who had long suffered under Byzantine misrule.
