We are going to continue to use a lot of coal, both in the US and around the world, and any planning that doesn't accept that fact is fallacious. The USA is the "Saudi Arabia" of coal.

I think much of the future energy debate will revolve around coal. Oil and natural gas are way too valuable to pass by, and they will be largely used up in 50 years. OTOH there is a tremendous supply of coal that could last for hundreds of years, and pump out vast quantities of CO2 and other serious pollutants. So I disagree with you and think coal is going to be politically "in play".

The potential competition against coal for electricity generation is nuclear, wind, solar, and thermal. Given the long time frame involved, there is plenty of room for technological innovation with these energy sources. Of course the coal industry is touting "clean coal", but I think it's a dubious concept. We'll see. I sure wouldn't buy any coal stocks right now.
