Maoris were purely barbaric before the British introduced civilization: <Man is nature is good, and becomes evil when civilized. He is the ideological leader of the "back to nature" concept. You and I put up with it in NZ and Hawaii with all the fawning over our local Polynesians.>

They were living in a purely wild hunter-gatherer tribal territorial alpha male found wealth dominance hierarchy based on breeding and conquest.

Which is not to say the British didn't have barbaric techniques as used in the Tower of London. But they did have the makings of other cultural developments such as habeas corpus, writing, individual freedom, private property, science and the vast range of other modern accoutrements which make life a heck of a lot better than the wild state.

You don't see any Maoris living the old way. Same as Eskimoes go hunting on snowmobiles with rifles and live in nice houses, not igloos. Life is better with a CDMA cyberphone than a walrus tusk.
