Yes, indeed. Several years ago I watched a program in which a panel including Neil Armstrong ranked the top ten scientific achievements of the last century. Rural electrification was Number One.

I like math, but for me it's a means to an end. For example, in my profession we use a measuring tape in which the inches are marked in units of 1 inch times Pi. We called it a diameter tape, because you put it around a cylindrical object like a tree and it reads the diameter directly.

The Poisson Distribution is another math concept that I used routinely in forestry. It allowed me to predict tree density by measuring the distance to the nearest tree from a sample point.
