Isn't "fear of the unknown and a desire for stability" the main driver behind all conservative movements?

The answer depends on how you define conservatism.

For example, the Teamster's Union (trucker's union), a powerful force in the Democrat party, opposes the recent change in laws pursuant to NAFTA to allow Mexican truckers to drive on US highways.

The reasons given boil down to fear of the unknown ("they might be dangerous") and desire for stability ("they work for 1/3 of what members of our union work for").

What is called "the leap of faith" isn't faith in a book but faith in God.

For monotheists, which includes Muslims, Christians, and Jews, there is only one God, and we all worship the same God.

Nothing man makes is perfect. Indeed, as you know, the craftsmen who make Persian rugs always leave a deliberate flaw which is intended to express that fact, "only God is perfect."

Human nature is fundamentally flawed, and human nature can never be changed, only improved with good upbringing and advances in culture.

Belief in human perfection, that one can act perfectly because God is on your side, is one of the Very Worst of Very Bad Ideas.

Forcing people to submit to your Book at the point of a sword is another Very Bad Idea.

For one reason, because your Book was written by a man, or many men, and only God is perfect.

For another reason, because even if the Books (Jews believe in One Book, Christians in Two Books, and, if I am not mistaken, Muslims believe in Three Books), even if these Books were perfect, our human understanding is still flawed.
