Life in the colony is VERY harsh, dull and boring. The psychologists on Earth came up with this game with dolls, the main doll of which was Perky Pat. The colonists build houses for her to live in, make her clothes and build an entire, full fantasy life for her. They get so into the game that all sorts of distorted thaings happen.
