"Do you see a way out of this mess?"

Out? Well my dad used to sneak up and knock me on the head with his knuckle when I wasn't doing what he thought I was supposed to do. Since no heavenly Father does that, I'm assuming I am not a Messiah.

Left wingers just say 'Get Out'. I don't believe that resolves the situation or I would wash my hand of the whole thing.

Improve? It depends on what you want. If you want an international relationship that is mutually beneficial, there is hope. I have hopes that the mess could be improved and to a huge extent. Conflicts where all parties have reason to mutually benefit are never improved by one entity winning and the other losing. For example, when divorces are won/lost the relation ship is annihilated and all those involved usually are damaged in the fray.

"Just remember the clock is running, nuclear weapons and Ahmadinejad's professed desire to usher in the twelfth imam, is a toxic combination -- this does not bode well.

Right. I want everybody to stop and think about something. Christians, Jews, and Muslims are expecting a Messiah to appear at some point and bring a sensible and reasonable peace to the planet. Everyone agrees about what a Messiah is, what a Messiah would do, and who a Messiah represents. Uhhh ... so we fight about that??? Let's be patient and let the Messiah clear up all confusion.

Likewise: If the 12th Imam is real and is God's hero then I would not want to be caught opposing that event; if not, there aint ever going to be any thing to oppose except wackos like Moktada Al-Sadr who exploit the mystical belief. He can preach about it all he wants, the moment (already passed) he begins to oppress, brutalize, or terrorize innocents, he becomes my enemy.

"Consider this -- Ahmadinejad is either truthful and signaling his plans, or he is a liar – there is no other rational conclusion to be formed from his comments. He has placed himself into a lose-lose situation where nothing he says can be believed and the Mullah’s, although backing off a bit now, have backed him too long and their credibility, from a western perspective, is tarnished as well.

I don't trust him. If his nuclear ambitions are only about bringing energy, as he claims, cooperation with the international nuclear regulators is in his best interests.

" hate to keep beating the same old horse, but meaningful communication is more that a discussion. The philosophical pre-suppositions MUST BE confronted. Hopefully, a verifiable compromise is still attainable -- this is axiomatic for survival.

Again, if the goal is the mutual well being of the participants, reasoned solutions can be found for most of these issues. If the goal is some other purpose... I suggest we all learn to duck.

"...confrontational because of these seemingly, irreconcilable philosophical differences -- nothing else -- period."

I don't believe there are irreconcilable differences and I constantly try to point out that what has been framed that way is based on a corruption of reason, or an attempt to create a perception of that.

"Looking to the outside and we see men like Ahmadinejad ...

He is losing his political clout even in Iran for his over the edge proclamations and provocations.

"Your mission is to come up with a solution to this mess."

If you mean to present an idea that would resolve the issues that's not hard at all. How about if everybody followed, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you?" If you mean to present an effective method for eliminating corruption and extremism from the world, I come up empty. Unless or until I stop hearing each side prefacing the do unto others rule with "You first," with regards to their counterparts.

SAN'A, Yemen - A hundred jailed Muslim extremists, including some who allegedly fought for al-Qaida in Iraq, were released by authorities, a Yemeni security official said.

The official, speaking Saturday on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media, said that some of the released completed serving their sentences, while some of the others were acquitted for lack of evidence.

He said the release of the 100 prisoners had been carried out in stages, with the last set free in late February.

The official added that 19 of the released fought under the command of al-Qaida in Iraq's previous leader, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, prior to his death in a U.S. airstrike last June. Some of the 19 had been convicted of plotting terrorist attacks after they were handed over to Yemen by Syria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and other countries.

Among the released were four Saudis and also members of a Yemeni extremist group — the Aden-Abyan Islamic Army that had kidnapped four tourists — three Britons and an Australian, in 1998. The tourists were killed in a botched rescue attempt by Yemeni security forces.

An interior ministry official, who said that the released members of Aden-Abyan Islamic Army were given $1,000 to help them restart life outside bars.
