The Old Testament is full of prescriptions for day to day living. There were rules covering diet, worship, marriage, divorce, hospitality, and so on. These are all referred to as 'God's laws'.

The New Testament introduces Christ as the bearer of a new covenant between man and God. Over time most of the rituals, laws and customs of early Jewish life fade away and aren't really replaced for the most part.

...and Zen (as in Japan) takes over one's entire life from flower arrangement to martial arts to architecture.

Would you say that Zen is more about How then Why? Western Christianity appears to me more instructive as to Why, hence it makes specific claims about the universe which have led to problems with science. Eastern atheistic religion seems to concern itself more with how to go about living and learning, but does not provide nearly so much detail about why the physical world is the way it is, that is left more open to discovery. Hence science appears less in conflict?
