venous strainer highly unlikely unless , he clots again. that is a major procedure, limits blood flow to lungs/heat through filter. normal procedure would to treat with aspirin , blood thinners, depending on size of clot. i expect it may be result of long flight to Afghanistan etc. clot could have been building for a few days until swelling and pain showed up.

wife has had a vena cava in her large leg vein in groin area for 35 years. This causes leg swelling, must elevate leg for periods of time each day to prevent it. Strong support stockings also required to avoid elephant ankles and more leg swelling and pain.
