"Rich" is such a relative term. Like the title of that great Les McCann tune, "Compared to What?". The poorest American is unbelievably wealthy compared to some of the nomads of Darfur or poor people in other places.

I'm not sure about the relative standards of yesteryear versus today. Money is about labor which is, ultimately, the source of all money. The 'poor' are still unable to have enough to keep body and soul together without constant labor.

I think people are fed a pack of lies. That propaganda includes the idea that the pie is a limited one and we're all scrambling for our piece of it. It includes the idea that being poor is a good thing and that holiness-poverty-chastity go together in some bizarre alliance.

All nonsense ideas IMO and very harmful to everyone. The current administration embodies these ideas...for everyone but themselves. They know the truth but they are delighted that most people are idiots and will remain idiots for life.

I am starting to see a change though and it comes from a variety of sources including some 'Christian' ones. We don't have to look far to see that diplomacy is better than war and that the $3billion/week going to blow up other people would be better spent on cooperative efforts like infrastructure and health care.

It's a trillion dollar lesson so I hope it sticks.
