"You probably know this but some words like 'also' are spelled the same way but pronounced a little differently while other words like 'hier' are spelled differently but pronounced nearly the same."

When my wife first moved here, sometimes she would get stuck for a word. When that happened, she took the German word and gave it an English form. It almost always worked.

LOL. That's funny and she is very clever. ;-)

"Also" may be spelled same way in English and German but the meanings of the word are different. Many little traps like that.
Like salire and salir in Italian and Spanish.
Same Latin root, basically same words but different meanings.
