You don't get the same results when a country is totally crippled and unable to get supplies. You get a crippled country, rotting. You could make it rot until it gave in- unconditionally, if you insist.

I need to look up the documents the Germans signed. I thought there was a difference between the unconditional surrender of the Japanese, and the surrender of the Germans. But I could be wrong about that. I'm going to check.
