married to a trophy wife The term "trophy wife" isn't a compliment. It means a very beautiful second (or third) wife that an upwardly mobile man marries after dumping the woman who helped him start up the ladder. A trophy wife is a status symbol, like a fancy car or a very expensive wristwatch. You might get away with calling Rudy Giuliani's second and third wives "trophy wives" (not that I agree with that) but Elizabeth Edwards you should just call his wife. They've been together since the beginning.
