You may want to read Oeconomicus post from the WaPo. IMO, once the Justice Dept. learned the so-called "leak" came from Armitage, who opposed the war & was clearly no insider at the WH, the investigation should have folded like a lawn chair.

I read something that by the time Fitzgerald came on the scene that Libby had already already purgered himself to the FBI. Based on this crime in front of him, even when it quickly became clear that there was no crime in the leak it would have been negligent to ignore the evidence pointing to a purgery crime by Libby. That sounds familiar? I should have linked the article - it tries to debunk the "once it was obvious there was no leak crime the whole thing should have ended" claim.
