More like half a percent.

And yes it does make our society less militaristic. People in the military are more focused on military concerns than typical civilians, both in terms of "state of mind", and in terms of what they put their effort in to.

o the toys kids play and the costumes they wear at Halloween to the guns lying around people's houses.

Privately owned guns are nothing new, and for the most part aren't particularly militaristic. As for toys and playing games involving pretending to use firearms, that goes back for probably almost as long as their have been guns. And before that kids pretended to use swords or other weapons.
