"You claim that the Muslims who perpetrate violence against non-Muslims are not "legitimate" Muslims."

I don't think I have made that claim. If somehow you got the idea that I had, then perhaps I didn't communicate my views well or maybe you assumed something more than what I have 'claimed'.

At the core of all religions is the directive to act with regard for the well being of self and others, which sounds simple enough but when others are acting outside of the beneficent natures we have all been endowed with, it becomes more complicated. We are also directed to take stands against injustice, abuse, and brutality. I don't see a conflict in the two perspectives. Stopping others from doing something regrettable (whether they see it the same way or not) is a means of reconciling these ordinances. So, I don't condemn all forms of violence committed by individuals or organizations, and I support our troops both in spirit and in their mission.

"I don't claim to be an expert on all the nuances of every variety of Islam, but who is? If you look at the horrendous carnage of Muslim against Muslim, even Muslims don't agree on what is "legitimate Islam."

Obviously I am not using a single broad brush. It should be easier for you to see now, how I personally make distinctions.

"Only Muslims can liberate themselves from this violence, but first they need to recognize that there is a problem."

As a believer you must appreciate the universal spirit that binds all of us into one humanity. It is only through reason that we can escape the illusions of our separateness and without common purpose we have no hope in peaceful coexistence.

Liberation is not a matter of defeating or annihilating those who are different but in locating the common purpose that binds the good in all of us, and which has given us material existence in this animated temporal state.

btw I realize, I may be speaking only for myself at this point.

Best regards,
Gem
