Big time. Huge political contributions from the sugar industry to politicians. They get the "sweetest" deal in agriculture; pun intended. It's another crooked Florida thing.

But if you are going to subsidize them, might as well do it for an ethanol end product... something that does the country much more good than sugar.

Do you know we put a .54 cent a gallon tariff on imported ethanol as a subsidy for both American sugar AND corn?

Wow. It's really amazing the complicated mess we have to navigate to make a level playing field for alternatives. I never knew that our gov't propped up the price of sugar. Those people must be ignorant, though. If they let the free market reign, sugar ethanol would more than likely keep the price of sugar high in the US. Not only that, but sugar is one of the best sources of ethanol, because of it's high energy yield.

What is that vicasse byproduct they referenced in the article? Do you know?
