Reagan broke the "never divorced" rule, and I don't remember it being any kind of issue with him. But he had found Nancy and they seemed to have that seemingly perfect second marriage so many people do find after the first one shows them what they did wrong.

For some people it is not the divorce, but how the person handles the difficult personal requirements of ending a close personal relationship. Both Newt and Rudy don't do well on this scale...again, in some people's views this is a relevant insight into the person himself.

Now, if a person stays in a marriage for convenience and then plays around continuously outside the marriage, that seems relevant too, of course.

And maybe having a solid marriage from day one just means the person is a nice guy (Jimmy Carter), but wouldn't be a good leader.

It is all in the wash somewhere....
