What if indeed. I wonder what kind of new chapter Mr. Kagan expects? Let's all hope the "what if" is positive. I'm afraid it's a bit like punching down dough- but maybe Mr. Kagan is correct.

In war and politics, Yogi Berra has the ultimate wisdom: "it ain't over 'til it's over"

Everyone and everyone's uncle knew the 'surge' was coming. They knew how many, where and when.

What do you think they did? Try and make a last stand against a vastly greater military force? Does anyone understand what a guerilla war is all about? Does anyone understand how terrorism is used as a military tactic?

Apparently, for some, the day's news is good enough. No amount of reasoning is necessary. Why bother to think about what is actually happening when one can simply be shallow?

In May of 2003 Bush declared Mission Accomplished. He declared that major combat operations had ended. Here, four years later he's asking for more troops, more money and a SURGE in major combat operations.

$500+ billion and 3100 KIAs later everyone forgets what he said 4 years ago. If 25,000 combat troops isn't a part of major combat operations, then what is?

Hook, link and stinker. Exactly how many tries at bat do these people get? If they manage to make up another $500 billion in US debt, do they get another 4 years after this? Do they?

Is there reconciliation and, if so, what is the end game? Where are the much-delayed provincial elections?

Why in the world would Cheney/Bush want to stop this war, find OBL and declare victory in the war against 'terror' when it's been a Rovian strategy to have perpetual war and a perpetual unitary presidency? Bush has declared that this will go on and on and on and on past his own presidency. Should people stop believing him on that score?

Is anyone home?

Kagan is one of the never-say-die Zionist neocon "brains" BEHIND the surge, and the original invasion of Iraq..

So, don't expect a balanced view.
