I think SI admin are usually only interested in intervening when they see threats, or things that rise to the level of real hate speech- and that can be fairly difficult to call- but it seems to me that the use of the "n" word, or very virulent anti- semitic or anti-gay rants or "jokes", can rise to the level of speech that admin will step in. Barring blatant things like that, you'd just be wasting your time. I understand wanting the thread to be more mannerly, goodness, I would love that- as you know- but SI admin has neither the time nor the inclination to help out here. Why should they? This is a backwater of SI, and is not a profit center for them.
