Agreed. But the most effective method of reducing the price of oil cut demand by 75% or more. If the US could become energy independent, meaning that we only use the amount of oil that we can produce domestically, then we'd cut our use from 20 mbpd to 5 mbpd, or 75%. If we could do that effectively, then I'd bet my house the rest of the world would follow. In reality, the US is being kicked dragging and screaming into the alternatives gig. But let's just for the moment assume we still knew how to be leaders. Then if the world were to reduce oil consumption by 75%, then that would result in a collapse in the price of oil and the Middle East would revert back to a worthless desert, which would take alot of money out of the hands of intolerant, backward extremists who want nothing but to destroy Western-style civilization. I'm all for that.

My core belief is that I don't think we can win the war on terror with our military only. We've proven in Iraq that this method alone won't work. So we need to get creative and solve the problem using our other weapons, namely our economy and its demand for products. Get our economy out of the business of buying oil and we solve the terror problem, but we also make our economy stronger and more resilient, and we do a little something nice for the environment as well.

The side benefit is that if oil prices collapse, there will be fewer dictators. Think Putin, Chavez, Ahmadenijad, et al. They are powerful, because the US makes them powerful. We need to stop being our own worst enemy.
