The quality of care, given the children, isn't an issue when the parents are headed to jail. First, its rare for both parents to be arrested and jailed at the same time. Second, most cps agencies prefer relative placement over foster care. Relative meaning grandparent, aunt, uncle, etc. I can think of one instance I know of where both the mom and dad were locked up at the same time - for different crimes (can't remember if they were drug crimes or not). The son lived with his grandfather. Of course sometimes there is no such relative or all the relatives have criminal backgrounds - cps doesn't put kids with people with criminal backgrounds. Foster care, for far to many children, is a hell on earth. I think so too. I cant imagine anyone letting a child of theirs be put in this situation. Thats why I have a serious strong dislike for parents who put their kids at risk of this - including those who do so by using drugs or booze regularly. Parents with dependent children should not be boozing and doping PERIOD. I am saying that as a moral judgment. Many times it is much worse than what they were taken out of. Unfortunately I think many times it isn't. This gets to our perception of habitual drug users. You think most drug users are nice harmless, even responsible people. If it weren't for the mean old laws, dopers wouldn't commit any crimes and everything would be nice and mellow. Based on what I've seen most drunks and dopers have low morals and characters. I think that its pretty hard for anyone to be a decent parent and also be a habitual drunk or doper. Darn close to impossible imo.
