Why were U.S. attorneys fired?
At least five of the fired U.S. attorneys appeared at hearings last week on Capitol Hill. Democratic lawmakers -- and a fair number of Republicans -- aren’t buying the Justice Department’s line that eight attorneys were asked to resign because of poor job performance, especially when most of them had good job reviews. Several of the attorneys believe they were fired to create openings for some GOP insiders to gild their resumes. David Iglesias says he was fired for not rushing a corruption probe that Sen. Pete Domenici (in photo), R-N.M., wanted completed (and improperly complained about to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales).
