Tough. Some states allow adjustments for inflation and re-setting upon sale.

I have no sympathy for someone who is living in a house that has appreciated substantially, but doesn't want to pay the taxes, retired or not.

If you're being taxed out of your house, book the gain and rent and buy back at a discount in a few years.

If you can't afford to pay the taxes, you no longer can afford that house anyway. That's the fact, Jack.
