With a global warming crisis looming, we need a new "man-on-the-moon" effort to protect our environment. We've incurred a lot higher costs in the name of environmental protection than we did to get to the moon. If a new addition of only the amount of inflation adjusted dollars that the Apollo program cost is all that is needed then its not a big problem, but I really doubt that applying that additional level of effort and cost would satisfy those calling for the "man-on-the-moon" effort.
