The essence of RYE is this

In an effort to add levity and humor to a bad run of luck I would always say RYE. It caught on and evoked laughter.

RYE like situation

So....the wife wrecked the Beemer did she? RYE!

So - RYE means - better you than me and I'm enjoying your current situation at your expense.

By the time I left school I had almost an entire university using the word RYE. I knew then that, no matter how insignificant, Agustus Gloop had left his University with a scar to prove he had been there
