But, it's great at what it is, a fund that's THERE, no matter what.

1 - Actually its not something you can count on 100% no matter what.

2 - Its rate of return might be negative. Not for many (perhaps not any) current retirees, but quite possibly for many future retirees.

Not true. It is not a fund that's there no matter what. It's an underfunded retirement plan invested so poorly (e.g. only in Treasuries) that it can't meet it's obligations.

I understand your arguments, but they are based on very simplistic notions of what retirement investing really should look like. To your credit, though, most of America thinks the way you do, which is precisely why we can't get Social Security fixed.
