Digging a well, pump installation, pressure tank, maintenance, foot valve and pump and tank replacement from time to time, salts to remove heavy metals, short lifespan of household equipment due to calcium and heavy metal buildup, etc. etc. Not to speak of the lost of pressure when the tank gets air logged.

Free water, I don't think so! You could, of course, be living on a pristine stream in Alaska or northern Quebec, but I doubt it.
