re: I remember my dad started shopping for back yard fallout shelters! We had drills where we all went to the basement of the local public school, which was the community shelter, as pole mounted sirens wailed. And of course, drills in school where we all went out into the hall, crouched on our knees facing the wall and covered our heads!

I remember all that stuff. Our family plan was to hide out in the basement (against a nuke!). So we stocked it up with all sorts of canned goods. Problem was when ever we ran out of something, we would raid the basement. In short order there was only a dozen little cans of tomato paste left.

Our post nuke experience would have been a culinary disaster!
