Could crazy technology save the planet?

This is the kind of stuff that amazes me and also makes me sad. This line reflects pretty much what I think:

"Of course it's desperation," said Stanford University professor Stephen Schneider. "It's planetary methadone for our planetary heroin addiction. It does come out of the pessimism of any realist that says this planet can't be trusted to do the right thing."

It reminds me of a painting done by a native artist in British Columbia about 12 years ago.
It's entitled something like, "White Man trying to fix hole in sky."
and is about the hole in the ozone layer.
There are scientists in lab coats standing atop ricketty, zigzagging ladders
going up into the sky,
and they're trying to block the hole with large bandages.
Some surreal-looking "natives" observe from within the forest.
