Also, an assertion that 1000ppm is a bad thing is not reasoning. I didn't see any argument there. Just a bald assertion. Also, silly Flannery thinks Gaia loves us. Gaia is clueless Wharfie, and does NOT love humans, and is happy to see vast species extinctions. Humans like humans. The rest of the biosphere sees as dinner. Gaia is indifferent. Natural systems didn't invent CDMA and cyberspace and won't control the climate in a way to keep me at the temperature at which I'm comfortable. <DR TIM FLANNERY: What I mean by that is that perhaps the situation will get so dire that the world will need to cooperate in a very...integrated way to stabilise the global climate. And that may involve restrictions on emissions from all sorts of sources - agriculture, mining, industry and whatever else, and once you get to that point, you get a government that reaches very, very deep down into the lives of individual human beings. And I think that's a very undesirable outcome. Far better to let Gaia, or let natural systems control the climate . If we get into a carbon dictatorship situation, we will have a truly dreadful dictatorship. We're carbon-based life. Carbon is everywhere, it's integral to the way the planet works. So you don't want to let things go on so long that you're forced into that rather terrible situation. > Flannery is also silly because he talks in terms of 10 billion people and maybe governments will need to "get into our bedrooms" to control the world's human population. The world's population is on a course to collapse, not Malthusian MADness. In case you hadn't noticed, the invention of contraception and cultural shifts have made having children a thing of the past. People now have to WANT to have children. They don't just get a dozen because they get randy, and need them anyway to provide warriors to defeat the tribes over the the other side of the river/mountain/ocean/desert. In the old days, it was populate or perish. It's different now Wharfie. It's interesting that Flannery got onto sex - that's what religious leaders do and it's their motivation to be leaders and why they need cults and believers. It's about girls, money, power and being alpha male. Flannery secretly wants all the girls in his government-approved bedroom, and he wants the money and control of what we do too. Mqurice
