BTW anyone know -- How does one completely delete a message (and its associated number) that is still in the "edit" mode?

You only have 15 minutes to edit and change a message. The message can be deleted but the message location and it's number remain. It is common to remove the message and repost an edited message using the word "edit" . Everyone will understand that. You have probably seen it done yourself many times.
