i look at it this way. private guy in business for himself comes out and patches a hole in your driveway entrance and takes off. gov. comes out , after you call the town for a permit to fill the hole, with a driver who's only job is to drive the truck, with supervisor who only supervises the driver and laborer and laborer fills hole. they put in a temporary patch and tell you it needs to settle and they will be back in a few months to put down a finish coat.

Had a conversation once with a friend - a terribly smart guy who is a university Prof - about charity vs. government sponsored welfare. He thought that conservatives didn't make sense on this subject. "How come when the private sector does something, they consider it a good thing, and when the government does exactly the same thing, it's bad?" -- was his question.

There speaks someone unclear on the law of unintended consequences.
