Iraq war is not related to Al Qaeda. The US invaded Iraq as a steppingstone in its long war against Iran.

Al Qaeda is mostly impotent now, most having been caught or killed. The threat remains from those that the US refers to Al Qaeda-affliated groups which are formed by terrorists who trained in the Al Qaeda camps in Afghanistan and Sudan or who drew inspiration from Bin Laden's philosophy of worldwide struggle against Western domination.

In fact, the war on terror is mostly concerned with terrorist insurgencies in other nations and not Al Qaeda. Here's a good read:
