What would be bad for the US about partitioning Iraq? My hunch is an independent Kurdistan would love to closely align itself with the US and host a few US military bases in order to discourage Turkey and Iran from invading it when their Kurdish populations get restive.

There's your permanents US military presence in the ME in a nutshell.

Arab Shiastan would act as a buffer between Persian Iran and the Sunni Arab side of the ME. That would help stabilize the "region".

As for Loserstan (Sunni Iraq), they may spend their time trying to wreak havoc on Kurdistan and Shiastan, but what in the world might they do that would harm US interests? You aren't one of those that thinks an entire population of 5 million Iraqi Sunnis are going to sit around their desert huts and plot how to blow things up in Philadelphia, are you?
