I don't read everybody, Elory. I know the sources I read discussed it often, and I discussed it often- saying (frequently) that I foresaw civil war, and/or partition, and or the emergence of a religious theorcracy- and none of those results seemed a good reason to spend US money and men on. I wasn't the only one to say that, and I saw it early and often. The administration didn't discuss it much, but that's because they were pretty darned stupid. Read any of the books about their "planning" (I liked Fiasco), and you'll see these gentleman couldn't plan their way out of a paper bag.
