OT/ Maslow always considered the "hierarchy of needs" a very preliminary theory, and may have been concerned when it was taught as established fact. See wikipedia on "Maslows Hierarchy of Needs", and the discussion session for some criticisms.

Another viewpoint: and executive in Silicon Valley told me that most people were in the "Safety / Security " category until they were making at least 75-100 k per year for a long time.
