Because NASA recognized her expertise. Funny how you are happy to disparage her with a nonsense comment. Thus far she's found cures for two childhood neurologic diseases. But NASA paid for her to have a research facility dedicated solely to muscles. There are certain metabolic diseases that require a sampling of muscle to determine the disease and find a treatment. This doctor pioneered a technique for doing this using less muscle than earlier techniques. This is important for babies, because they don't have much muscle tissue to give. Muscles deteriorate in space, she's a muscle tissue expert, NASA hired her to help them in this reqard. And she has a permanent research facility that she heads in Canada. But she took a sabatical for one-year to work for NASA.
