China's Premiere to Visit SK Telecom in April

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao will arrive in South Korea on April 10 for a two-day visit. Wen will meet with SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won and visit SK Telecom's test center for a TD-SCDMA (Time-Division Synchronous CDMA) network in Bundang, Gyeonggi Province.
TD-SCDMA is China's homegrown platform for third-generation mobile telephony services. It's caught the attention of wireless system vendors as it will be used by 1.3 billion Chinese people.

SK Telecom, which has shown great interest in the Chinese market, last year signed a memo of understanding to cooperate on the TD-SCDMA project with the National Development and Reform Commission of China and set up the Bundang test center as part of that.

Wen is China's second in command after President Hu Jintao. This will be his first visit to South Korea since his inauguration in 2003. Wen's planned visit to SK is unusual -- until now the most common destinations for high-ranking Chinese visitors have been Samsung Electronics' Giheung plant and LG Electronics' Pyeongtaek plant.

China's Xinhua news service reported on Wednesday that China Mobile Communications Corporation invited bids for contracts to build its TD-SCDMA network, the nation's first high-speed network.

China Mobile's plan to buy equipment is a prelude to the opening of China's third-generation mobile communications market. Some industry insiders predict that with Wen's visit, SK Telecom may take a step closer to attaining its goal to offer service in China.
