Malaysian monks give green light to kill fire ants at temple

Mar 13, 2007, 10:55 GMT

Kuala Lumpur - A group of Buddhist monks living at a temple in the northern Penang state have given the go-ahead to destroy a large colony of fire ants which had been plaguing the temple for years, reports said Tuesday.

The monks were reported to have had to co-exist with the poisonous ants for many years, as they were forbidden to kill any living creature.

However, they highlighted their plight to local media after the aggressive ants stung many temple devotees.

Following the report, a university professor offered to destroy the ants on behalf of the temple, saying that the fire ant colony would continue to grow.

'We don't usually provide this service but I can understand the monks' predicament because they cannot kill any living being,' the professor was quoted as saying by the Star daily.

Earlier reports said that temple devotees have tried numerous ways to get rid of the ants, including using a vacuum cleaner to suck up all the ants and relocate them.

However, the ants soon came back, the Star said.

The temple's chief monk said they have given the go-ahead to the team to destroy the ants, saying that while monks were forbidden to kill living creatures, outsiders were free to do it as long as the intention was to protect other human beings.
