Fallows in effect suggesting that we declare "mission accomplished" is rich irony. But like Bush's mission, I think it is premature to declare victory on the basis of a situation that could change drastically in an instant.

One thing the article didn't mention is the battles Al Qaeda has been fighting in Iraq as well as Afghanistan. They have clearly poured their resources into Iraq, and their resources are not infinite. It's handy to work on the assumption that they wouldn't have been able to recruit any of the hundreds of suicide bombers they have sent to Iraq if there had been no war there, but I don't believe it.

"And while AQ as an operational entity may have been crippled, it doesn't take much to cause a tremendous amount of dislocation."

Dislocation in the ME doesn't mean gone. Turkey and Syria provide safe havens and southern Pakistan is an attractive gathering place. But it will be nice if we can help get things straightened out in Iraq.
