gb,

i'm not a fan of the whole drm thing. but i don't illegally download content. i'd love to be able to build a legal htpc.

i'm sure lots of folks are imagining ways to defeat the ati/cablecard scenario. i'm equally sure that cablelabs has their own blackhat team

My first objective in this regard is to be able to buy this tuner, plug it into my DIY PC, use my cable service that I pay for on a PC running a legal copy of Vista Ultimate, that is advertized with to have that functionality.

I don't think it is reasonable for this cabal (Microsoft, cable company and the Hollywood stutios) to expect me to dump my existing PC, replace it with one that is "blessed" by them. Same with the OS, which I already own.

Then, like you, I would like to go step further and build a PWR. I think this is more or less sanctioned under Media Center version of Windows, which is included in Vista Ultimate. Definitely for the analog connection.

I think under Vista, the PWR functionality is (going to be) extended to DTV and HDTV, once the ATI cards are out, which is where the sticking point apparently is. We know that there is an extended DRM infection in Vista to prevent any kind of "leak".

What I don't get is how a "blessed" Dell PC is deemed secure and not blessed DYI PC like mine is not deemed secure. A blessed Dell is just a PC, like mine. You can add, remove, swap cards, load unload software, plug in things to USB, firewire.
