The issue being discussed was whether the military and/or the military industrial complex, was a bigger part of the country than it used to be.

You're missing my point. Its not just about how much money we spend on defense but the kind influence the industry has on the American psyche. My argument is that the defense industry has grown significantly in importance since WW II and has greater sway over the American POV than it had 50 years ago. So much so that its become okay to invade foreign countries at the drop of a hat.
