The Soviet Union, North Korea, China under Mao, etc. where examples of the reality of communist states. When the means of production, and much of what is produced is owned collectively on a scale of a whole country, effectively it is owned by the government. When the government controls the economy then government officials will grab the goods for themselves, but the fact that greed exists in communist societies as well as everywhere else doesn't define these societies as something other than communist.

Tim, East Germany was called the German Democratic Republic. Do you think that the GDR was a democracy? Saddam had national elections where 97% of the people voted. Do you think that Iraq under Saddam was more democratic than the US? The Soviets called their political parties the people's party. Do you really believe the people controlled the political parties in the soviet states? Republicans have claimed they are very much behind the American soldier, and yet, some military equipment being used over in Iraq was substandard and inadequate. Under the GOP the veteran's hospitals have been allowed to deteriorate. The Klan claimed to be a peace loving organization.

Its not uncommon for public entities to claim one thing and be something else.
