What was Bush's yammering about bringing democracy to Iraq? This whole fiasco makes 'democracy' look like the worse thing since communism.

Charlie Rose had some interesting guests on last night. The general mood was somber. Apparently there's no trust for the Maliki government amongst the Sunnis and even some of the Shiites. If the US military left, they'd have to take the Maliki government with them. Maliki is rather paranoid about a military coup which would come from the mixed but still Sunni-dominated army.

I find it rather alarming that we are paying to train Iraqi 'security forces' which are army (still Sunni?) and police (Shiite militia?). They are learning our latest military tactics and then, who knows, probably using some of them on us the next day.

This is ridiculous.

Just for this reason alone, why the heck don't we pull out? Why are we teaching them and on our dime?
