Since then, tuition at public and private universities has soared while government support for higher education, other than student loan programs, has diminished.

How can we afford to aid higher education when we are spending so much money on defense? The Tims not withstanding people just don't get how much of the country's disposable income is going towards warring.

And I also find it interesting in a country that is so committed to growth and expansion, we have so few new universities coming on line. Occasionally, one of the state systems will set up a new campus branch in a new city but for the most part, the universities that exist now now have been around for decades if not centuries. That means this country is still committed to the notion that higher education is an elitist institution.
