But why did he need to hold a press conference to announce that he would "campaign on" despite his wife's lamentable condition?

Ego?

Sympathy factor?

He'll have to make peace with himself (and his kids) over his decision someday.

Being a Democrat, he knew what the nest of vipers in the Liberal Press would do to him, his wife and their family if he didn't announce clearly exactly what was happening. Now at least there is a slim chance the Death Watch won't start on the first slow news day.
