I dreamed about getting into the Marines for the same reason, and also the fact that my Dad and my best friend's Dad were Marines. Neither of us made it. My Dad would have culled me out as a 4-F, but I got a 1Y designation. Battle Cry was a great book. I still remember one of the lines from a letter to home from one of the guys. "I can't tell you where I am, but I find I have lots of new zeal and energy." The other stuff you won't go into kept my rapt attention too.
