why was Libby stupid enough to lie under oath? People don't lie when they have nothing to hide.

He may not have. In one charge, the jury was charged with believing either Libby or Russert re. a conversation on a certain date. They decided Libby was lying and Russert was telling the truth.

It could have been the other way round or more likely one or both simply misremembered.

Perjury charges are easy to get. He should have said he didn't remember to every question. When Vernon Jordan was questioned about what if anything Clinton had told him about the Lewinsky scandal, Jordan had trouble remembering anything. He was likely lying about that but was safe legally.
