If we go back over 5,000 years or so, the ocean level was lower, so there would be many more islands to use as rest stops.

There's a long chain from Hawaii to Midway, with places like French Frigate Shoals, which would have been viable islands for the short term. Archeologists have found artifacts offshore of certain that were once probably on shore.

Also with the lower water level, the land areas of the islands would be larger. Look at all the islands which have shallow water around them for miles.
